Playdough and Toothpick Constructions

Objective

The objective of this project is to explore basic engineering and architectural principles by constructing various shapes and structures using playdough and toothpicks. Students will learn about the strength and stability of different shapes and how they can be used to build sturdy constructions. This project encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Scientific Interpretation

In this project, students will learn about geometric shapes and how they form the building blocks of all structures. Triangles are often used in construction because of their inherent stability. By combining playdough and toothpicks, students can create 3D shapes such as tetrahedrons, cubes, and pyramids. This activity demonstrates how different shapes can bear loads and remain stable. Students will also observe how the materials interact and support each other, giving them a hands-on understanding of structural engineering concepts.
