Objective
To build a “greedy cup” (also known as Pythagoras cup) that demonstrates the principles of hydraulic pressure and siphoning. This project helps students explore the concept of liquid dynamics in an engaging way.
Scientific interpretation
The Greedy Cup operates on the principle of a siphon, where liquid is moved over an obstacle in a vessel, only to fall due to gravity on the other side. This device uses a hidden siphon in the middle of the cup that triggers when the water level reaches a certain height. The pressure then forces the liquid to flow up and out through the bottom, emptying the cup. This teaches about the principles of pressure and fluid dynamics in a fun and interactive way.
