Overview
In this project, we will learn how to create a model of lungs using balloons and straws. The lungs are the respiratory organs for humans and many animals, extracting oxygen from the air and transferring it to the bloodstream while expelling carbon dioxide. In this experiment, balloons represent the lungs, straws act as the trachea, the bottle serves as the chest, and the balloon at the bottom of the bottle functions as the diaphragm. When the diaphragm is pulled, the pressure inside the bottle decreases, causing the balloon “lungs” to inflate. Pressing the diaphragm reverses the process. This simplified lung model demonstrates how real lungs work, with the diaphragm contracting to increase chest cavity volume and fill the lungs with air. Note that this model does not account for the movement of intercostal muscles.
